What we do

As a charitable organisation we depend on the generosity of our donors and their owners to allow us to provide our life saving products to the veterinary profession.

From a donors point of view, the process of collecting canine blood is quite simple.  We hold blood drives at local veterinary practices and at each we aim to have 12 – 15 donors come along to make a donation.

Each dog is initially given a health check by our qualified veterinary team to ensure they are fit and suitable to donate on that day.  Our first time donors are blood typed and screened to give us all the vital information we need about their blood.  If our donors are not already microchipped we’ll also chip them so that when they donate again in the future we can easily source all of their personal data; of course for owners of our donors the microchip can also give added peace of mind about their dog’s safety and security.

Giving a donation takes approximately 5 - 10 minutes, and owners should expect to be with us for 30 – 40 minutes in total to allow for their health check and screening.  After giving their donation our donors are given a PBBuk goody bag, a drink and biscuit (the equivalent of tea and a biscuit for us humans!) and a well deserved tummy rub.

The PBBuk team will then take these precious donations back to our state of the art lab in Loughborough.  At the present time we cannot travel further than 2 hours from our lab for our blood drives due to time constraints with regard to processing the blood.  However, we hope that this will change in the future as we’d like to purchase a special mobile unit to help us process donations on the move. Why not click here to find out how you can help us fund raise to buy our mobile unit.

Once back at the lab the blood is processed and split into packed red blood cells and fresh plasma.  From here we then supply veterinary practices across the UK with these life saving products.
