Wendy Barnett DipAVN (Surgical) VN – Executive Director
Wendy qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in December 1992.  She started in mixed animal practice in Cornwall before spending 2 years locuming in the UK. In 1996 she took a head nurse position in Sussex to pursue a Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) which she gained in March 1999. In 2000 Wendy moved into the emergency and critical care field eventually taking a position as clinical manager with Vets Now at their Bristol clinic. Wendy used her time off from the emergency shifts to train as a human phlebotomist for the National Health Service. This phlebotomy interest led to Wendy being given the post of pet blood bank researcher for Vets Now in January 2006 - the research has taken Wendy far and wide from the USA to Australia. Vets Now agreed to raise the funds to support the UK’s first Pet Blood Bank Charity on completion of the research programme. Wendy currently resides as a trustee and is the authorisation holder of the VMD licence for Pet Blood Bank UK.

Jenny Walton BVM&S MRCVS – Veterinary Supervisor

Jenny Walton qualified from the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies in 1998.  She spent 4 years in mixed practice in Yorkshire and Northumberland prior to moving into the field of Emergency and Critical care.  She spent 4 years at Gateshead Vets Now and moved to the new Middlesbrough Vets Now clinic in October 2006.  She sits on the Vets Now clinical board, headed up the Vets Now blood trial donor project and is now Veterinary supervisor for Pet Blood Bank UK.

Jenny Babington, BVetMed MRCVS - Veterinary Surgeon
Jenny Babington is one of the veterinary surgeons in charge of blood collections/drives. Her role involves ensuring donations are carried out following the correct procedures, including supervision of all staff, owners and donors at the blood collection. She carries out the physical examination of the donors prior to collection and interprets the health questionnaires completed by owners. Jenny ensures the donors’ owners are fully aware of the blood donation procedure and have had an opportunity to raise any questions they may have. She then takes the blood unit from the donor with the assistance of the nursing team, and ensures the donor is monitored post-donation until ready to leave.

Vanessa Ashall, BVSc MRCVS- Veterinary Surgeon

Venessa trained at Liverpool Veterinary School and qualified in 2000. She worked in mixed practice in Yorkshire for three years and then worked as a small animal locum in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. She then took up the post of Named Veterinary Surgeon at The Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition in 2004 where she was responsible for the veterinary care and welfare of a large population of dogs, cats, birds and fish. Venessa enrolled on the RCVS Certificate in Welfare Science, Ethics and Law in 2005 and is currently studying towards this qualification. In addition her my skills as an experienced small animal clinician her interest in welfare and ethics is valuable to PBBuk in helping to maintain the highest standards of welfare for their much loved donor animals.

Kirsten Dunlop, Development Manager
Kirstens role is to raise the profile of the Pet Blood Bank UK as a reputable charity while maximising the charitable income for the PBBuk. This role involves creating and implementing a community, individual and corporate fundraising strategy, creating a volunteer programme and researching and completing trust applications.

Debra Stead, Pet Blood Bank Co-ordinator
Debra is the first point of contact when owners and vets practices get in touch with the Blood Bank. Her role includes contacting veterinary practices to arrange dates for blood drives and then inviting owners from our donor database to bring their dogs along to donate blood. She sends all blood test results to the donor’s vets and blood type information to the donor’s owner. Debra is also responsible for the day to day running of the office and accounts and also takes the orders from the Vets practices around the UK and dispatches the blood and consumerable products on a daily basis.
