PBBuk collect blood from volunteer canine donors which is then processed, stored and supplied to veterinary practices across the UK for use in transfusions.
Our donors give their donations at blood drives held at veterinary practices within a 2 hour drive of our processing lab in Loughborough (if you're interested in finding out more about hosting a blood drive please click here). At present we can only travel a maximum of 2 hours from the lab due to the fact that fresh plasma must be frozen within 6 to 8 hours of collection; however we hope in the future to have a mobile unit to allow us to travel a greater distance.
After each blood drive we return with to our state of the art facility in Leicestershire where the blood is processed and stored as a number of blood products; whole blood, packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate and cryo-supernatant.
We store blood onsite ready to be shipped to veterinary practices; our storage facility contains fridges and freezers which are monitored 24 hours a day to ensure product quality. Readers constantly track and record any fluctuations in temperature to ensure that all products are maintained in specific conditions. In addition all fridges onsite also have a two-day battery back-up to ensure blood products are not affected if there are any power cuts.
Veterinary practices across the UK can then order blood products for use within their practice to provide transfusions.
