Do you have strong phlebotomy skills and an interest in transfusion medicine? Are you passionate about providing excellent patient care, client care and customer service and making a difference to the lives of others?
Launched in 2007, Pet Blood Bank UK (PBB) is a groundbreaking and unique not for profit organisation providing a canine blood bank service for all veterinary practitioners across the UK.
Our aim is to advance animal health and welfare and to relieve suffering by providing quick and convenient access to blood. Similar to the human blood service, dog owners kindly bring along their much loved canine companions to give blood at one of our many sessions across the country. The blood is then taken to our state of the art processing centre in Loughborough where it is separated into red blood cells and plasma products, and then stored ready for dispatch.
PBB is now seeking a dedicated Veterinary Surgeon on a permanent part-time flexible basis. You will take charge of blood collections sessions ensuring donations are performed following the correct procedures as well as supervising all staff at collection sessions, which includes supervision of PBB’s RVN’s.
Flexibility to work at various venues is also required: departing from the Loughborough based office, the collection team go to collection sessions at venues across the Midlands and beyond. This role is part-time, working 1 day per week and alternate weekends.
You will have responsibility for:
- Full physical examination of the canine donor including clinical history, blood sampling, interpretation of results and assessing donor for the donation
- Occasionally you may be required to take the donation
- Ensuring all necessary paperwork is completed by owner and veterinary team
- Ensuring the overall success of your session
All PBB veterinary surgeons are trained to use our online blood review system which provides routine biochemistry and haematology results for our donors and quality control analysis of blood products. This can be done either at the PBB office or remotely from home.
In addition to the collection sessions, there will be opportunities to attend veterinary events and pet owner events to promote and raise awareness of PBB.
