The role
We are seeking a Laboratory Manager to lead our team in delivering lifesaving blood products for veterinary use. You’ll be responsible for overseeing laboratory operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining the highest quality and safety standards.
Working closely with the Logistics and Customer Service teams, you’ll ensure efficient blood stock management and timely product supply. You’ll also support scientific research and the development of new and existing blood products. This is a key leadership role requiring strong team management skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Launched in 2007, Pet Blood Bank UK is the only charity that provides a blood bank service for all vets across the UK. As part of our charitable remit, our aim is to advance animal health and welfare and to relieve suffering by providing quick and convenient access to blood. What you’ll do
- Lead and manage the Laboratory Team, ensuring all staff work effectively and efficiently.
- Oversee blood processing and stock management, ensuring the timely and safe supply of products.
- Maintain compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) requirements.
- Monitor temperature control systems and ensure laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
- Work closely with the Logistics and Customer Service teams to ensure efficient product dispatch and delivery.
- Support scientific research and contribute to the development of new and existing blood products.
- Collaborate with the Quality Department to ensure compliance with all internal and external regulatory requirements.
- Provide emergency cover as part of the on-call rota to support urgent product dispatch needs.

You will need to be confident in managing a team, ensuring compliance, and working collaboratively across departments to deliver an efficient and high-quality service. The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to supporting the charity’s mission of saving lives.
We’re looking for someone who has;
- Strong leadership skills, with experience managing teams in a laboratory or healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of laboratory operations, blood processing, or biomedical sciences.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Experience working in a regulated environment, with a strong understanding of GMP and quality control procedures.
- Exceptional organisational skills and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams and departments.
- A flexible and proactive approach, with a commitment to animal welfare and the charity’s mission.

Further details
This is a full-time, site-based role at our Loughborough laboratory. The core working hours are Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm, but flexibility is required to support processing shifts, which start from 6am, and occasional Sunday processing shifts.
As the head of the department, you will also oversee temperature monitoring for blood stock, which includes being on call to support the Out of Hours team with any blood stock or temperature-related issues.
