The Role

Award-winning animal charity, Pet Blood Bank UK is recruiting for the position of Laboratory Processor. This is a part-time position working Sunday, Monday and Wednesday or Friday - with the offer of extra shifts to cover holidays. This role would suit someone who is looking to gain laboratory experience within an animal charity.

What you’ll do
  • Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you’ll ensure whole blood is processed, labelled and stored within the required timescales in line with our Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Complete administration tasks relating to the processing, quality, control, and stock management of all blood products and equipment in line with our SOPs
  • Ensure all blood screening, quarantine and release procedures and quality control measures are followed and recorded in line with SOP
  • Rotate blood stocks to minimise wastage and support wider teams
  • Monitor and maintain consumables stock levels
  • Maintain all laboratory equipment in a clean and orderly manner
  • Assist with the management of clinical waste
  • Comply with the Principles of Good Manufacturing Practice for all areas within the department
  • Assist with Pet Blood Bank research and development projects including performing sample collection, processing and storage as required for specific projects
  • Identify any risks to our operating model and escalate as required
  • Participate in our out of hours service and distribute blood products as set out in our SOPs
What we need

We’re looking for someone with strong organisational skills and who is comfortable working on their own as well as being part of a larger team. As this role involves updating and maintaining records, we require someone who is computer literate. In addition to this we’re looking for the following:

  • Flexibility to work overtime if required
  • Ability to work under pressure with competing priorities
  • Excellent organisational and time management
  • A proactive, positive attitude is essential for this role as well as is the flexibility to meet business demands
  • High tolerance handling blood and components products in line with Health and Safety requirements

This is a part-time role working 22.5 hours per week. Shifts will be Sunday, Monday & Wednesday or Friday (depending on the rota). Normal hours of work will be 6am-2pm or 7am-3pm with the offer of extra shifts to cover holidays, to be discussed at interview. Overtime may also be required including assisting with holiday cover for our out-of-hours blood distribution service.
