To be a blood donor, your dog must be:

  • Fit and healthy
  • Between one and eight years old
  • Weigh more than 25kg
  • Have a good temperament
  • Have never travelled abroad
  • Vaccinated
  • Not on any medication

If your dog meets the above criteria, you can register them for a future collection session.

Dog blood types

Like us, dogs have different blood types and in the UK we test for DEA 1 Negative and Positive. With only 30% of our donors being Negative blood type, keeping up with demand can be challenging. We have found that certain breeds are more likely to be Negative and we are particularly appealing to these owners to register their canine companion.

Negative breed list:

  • Airedales
  • American Bulldog
  • Border Collies
  • Boxers
  • Doberman
  • Dogue de Bordeaux
  • English Bull Terriers
  • Flat Coated Retrievers
  • German Shepherds
  • Greyhounds
  • Lurchers
  • Old English Sheepdog
  • Pointer
  • Weimaraners

If your dog does not meet our donor criteria, there are still lots of ways that you can get involved in helping us.
