We’re excited to offer free blood typing sessions for dogs across the UK, giving you the chance to find out your dog’s blood type and learn more about what we do at Pet Blood Bank.

Should your dog ever need a lifesaving transfusion, knowing their blood type is vital and means your vet can get the blood they need as quickly as possible.

Why blood typing matters

Just like humans, dogs have different blood types. In the UK, we type for DEA 1, and dogs can be either positive or negative.

Only 30% of dogs are negative, and that blood type is always in high demand because it can be safely given to any dog in an emergency.

Knowing your dog’s blood type offers reassurance should they ever need a transfusion because it means your vet can quickly order the right blood product for them.

What to expect at a blood typing session
  • A warm welcome from our friendly team
  • A quick blood typing test (just a small sample taken from your dog’s leg or neck)
  • Find out your dog’s blood type
  • Time for cuddles, treats, and questions

Typing is completely free, and there’s no obligation to register your dog as a donor. We’re here to help you learn more and see if donation might be right for you and your dog.

To be eligible for the blood typing sessions, dogs must be:

  • Fit and healthy
  • Between one and eight years old
  • Weigh more than 25kg
