The role
We are recruiting for a Veterinary Nurse to work as a phlebotomist at venues across the Northeast, including venues at; Newcastle, Durham, Morpeth, Corbridge, Stockton, Middlesborough and must also be able to travel to North Yorkshire. This role involves working at donation sessions where lifesaving blood is collected from dogs. As a phlebotomist, you are responsible for performing blood collections from our canine donors, whilst working alongside the supervising Veterinary Surgeon and Donor Assistants. The role is key to ensuring successful donation sessions and providing a positive experience for all our donors and their owners.

What you’ll do
- Perform canine whole blood unit collections under direction of the supervising Veterinary Surgeon.
- Ensure donor records are completed correctly, accurately and in full, both on paper and electronically.
- Ensure donor owners are fully aware of the blood donation process.
- Build a rapport with donors and their owners to ensure they feel valued and involved - provide a positive donation experience from start to finish.
- Maintain a good relationship with our host venues.
- Communicate with Pet Blood Bank staff, including your regional collection team, Regional Coordinator, Area Supervisor and office staff.
- Supervise Donor Assistants working on session, understand their role and perform Donor Assistant tasks if required.
- Ensure donors are monitored both throughout the donation process and in post donation.
- Provide post donation communication to donor owners.
- Assist with and support the training of new team members and ensure all training records are completed correctly.
- Attend events to promote Pet Blood Bank and recruit donors and volunteers.
What we need
We're looking for someone who is:
- Is a Registered Veterinary Nurse with a minimum of 2 years post registration clinical experience.
- An interest in phlebotomy and confidence to learn a new skill
- Confident working in a small team and the ability to lead/direct those working with you in donation
- Holds a full UK driving licence and has access to their own transport.
- Is organised, pro-active and team orientated.
- Has the ability to problem solve, has good organisation skills and attention to detail.
- Is an excellent communicator with strong customer care skills.
- Is confident in blood sampling with owners present.
To ensure you can complete the required training we may arrange for you to attend some sessions outside of the region, mileage allowance and accommodation will be organised where required.

Further details
This role is a flexible with a minimum of 1 session per month to maintain skills. The rota is organised by our Regional Coordinator over 3 months and depending upon pre-arranged sessions and team availability. The role is not a full-time position, we host approximately 2-4 sessions a month on weekends only across the Northeast region.
Sessions are approximately 8 hours in length and flexibility is essential as start and finish times will be dependent upon the location of the venue.
Access to your own transport and a willingness to travel is essential especially for initial training which is likely to be provided outside of the Northeast region. (Please note not all venues are accessible by public transport).
