The Role  

Animal charity Pet Blood Bank UK is recruiting for the position of a Registered Veterinary Nurse.

This is an exciting and rewarding flexible role working with our South East Collection Team. You will perform blood collections from our canine donors, whilst working alongside the supervising Veterinary Surgeon and Donor Assistants at a variety of venues, meeting up to 23 potential donors and their owners at each session. The role is key to ensuring successful donation sessions and providing a positive experience for all our donors and their owners.

We are looking for a phlebotomist to cover Saturday and Sunday sessions in the Canterbury, Maidstone, Godstone, Tunbridge Wells, Upminster and Gravesend areas and a Tuesday session once every 8 – 10 weeks in the Canterbury area. A willingness to travel is essential as there may be times you are asked to work across the entire region.

What you’ll do  
  • Perform canine whole blood unit collections under direction of the supervising Veterinary Surgeon. 
  • Ensure donor records are completed correctly, accurately and in full, both on paper and electronically. 
  • Ensure donor owners are fully aware of the blood donation process.  
  • Build a rapport with donors and their owners to ensure they feel valued and involved - provide a positive donation experience from start to finish.  
  • Maintain a good relationship with our Host Venues. 
  • Communicate with Pet Blood Bank staff, including your regional collection team, Regional Coordinator, Area Manager and office staff. 
  • Supervise Donor Assistants working on session, understand their role and perform Donor Assistant tasks if required. 
  • Ensure donors are monitored both throughout the donation process and in post donation. 
  • Provide post donation communication to donor owners. 
  • Assist with and support the training of new team members and ensure all training records are completed correctly. 
  • Attend events to promote Pet Blood Bank and recruit donors and volunteers. 
What we need  

We’re looking for someone who is:  

  • Is a Registered Veterinary Nurse with a minimum of 2 years post registration clinical experience.  
  • Holds a full UK driving license and has access to their own transport. 
  • Is organised, pro-active and team orientated. 
  • Has the ability to problem solve, has good organisation skills and attention to detail. 
  • Is an excellent communicator with strong customer care skills. 
  • Has availability on weekend days. 
  • Is confident in blood sampling with owners present. 

To ensure you can complete the required training we may arrange for you to attend some sessions outside of the South East region, mileage allowance and accommodation will be organised if this is required.

The rate of pay is £14.55/hour and a mileage allowance of 35p/mile offered for travel to and from venues.

Further details  

Sessions are approximately 8 hours in length and flexibility is essential as start and finish times will be dependent upon the travel time to and from the venues.  Veterinary Nurses are anticipated to work at least one session per month to meet the required expectation of a minimum of 12 sessions a year to maintain their skills.  

Own transport is required to get to venues - please note not all are accessible by public transport.
