Norman’s journey as a blood donor began with a very special dog Molly, a beloved rescue Staffie who inspired his owner Lynn to give back and help save the lives of other dogs.
Adopted at six months old, Molly was diagnosed with chronic lymphatic leukaemia (lymphoma) in 2019. She was referred to The University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital where her prognosis was 12 to 18 months with treatment. However, thanks to the expertise of the excellent oncology team, Molly defied the odds and lived for five more wonderful years before passing away.
Throughout her journey, Molly showed incredible resilience. She underwent chemotherapy, had a sarcoma removed in early 2023, and even required surgery to remove a swallowed toy, all without ever seeming to realise she was unwell. Towards the end of her life, her platelet levels dropped dangerously low, and while she never needed a transfusion, it was something her family had to consider.
Meanwhile, Norman, the family’s other dog, was a happy and healthy boy with a lovely laid-back nature.
It was during one of Molly’s many hospital visits that her owner’s son, Scott, picked up a Pet Blood Bank leaflet. The thought occurred: if we were prepared to accept a transfusion for Molly, shouldn’t we also consider giving one back? That’s when Norman’s journey began.
At his first donation session, true to his easy-going nature, Norman took the process in his stride and gave his first unit of blood without a fuss. Now he’s two donations in and very much at the beginning of what his family hopes will be a long and impactful donor journey.
Norman’s family are so proud of him for helping to save lives. Through these donations, Molly’s legacy lives on and will make a lasting difference for other dogs in need.
If your dog is fit and healthy, between 1 and 8 years old, weighs over 25kg, and is confident, they could become a blood donor like Norman and help to save lives.
