Pitch laying on a stone wall surrounded by nature

Pitch was an 11 year old black Labrador who had been part of her family since she was just six weeks old.

Pitch was still active and enjoying life, frequently walking up to four miles a day, and showing no signs that anything was wrong. It was only during investigations for what appeared to be a fatty lump that the team at Cave Vets in Wellington discovered something far more serious: a large tumour growing around her liver.

The tumour was growing rapidly, and surgery was her only chance. Thanks to our amazing community of lifesaving blood donors, the operation was able to go ahead.

During the five hour operation, Pitch lost almost three‑quarters of her blood, but she came out the operation and fought hard for three more days – precious time her family would not otherwise have had. Sadly, due to an underlying heart condition, her body struggled to recover and she passed away soon after.

Pitch’s owner, Nicholas, said: ‘You gave us the only shot we had at extending her life. Without the donated blood, we would not have even had that chance. Pitch was clever, loving, gentle to children and my soul. I would give anything to have her back.’

Pitch’s story shows exactly why canine blood donation is so vital. Without donated blood, some dogs never get the chance to fight.

Because of donated blood, Pitch was given the chance she deserved. If your dog is aged between 1 and 8, over 25kg, and fit and healthy they could be a lifesaver and help other dogs. Visit our dog blood donation pages to learn more.
