It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since Scooby, a brave Cocker Spaniel, received four lifesaving blood transfusions.
Back then, Scooby faced an uncertain future, not knowing if he would make his sixth birthday, Christmas, or even see 2026. Thanks to the blood transfusions and the incredible care from Langford Small Animal Hospital and Yatton Vets, Scooby pulled through.
Today, Scooby is thriving.
After a small setback in April and May 2025, there were concerns he might need another transfusion but thankfully, that wasn’t necessary. Since then, he’s come on leaps and bounds. He’s enjoying long walks with his sister again, and even managed two holidays to France.
His owner, Rosemary, said: ‘To see him now you really wouldn’t know anything was wrong. He’s still immuno-suppressed so we are careful, but looking back to this time last year we would have given anything to be where we are at today, and it’s thanks to all those whose dogs donate that we’ve been given this chance.’
Scooby’s journey inspired Rosemary to give back. Recently, she started volunteering at our donation sessions and describes the experience as ‘fabulous.’
‘I’m meeting lots of lovely dogs and their owners, hearing their stories, getting tips on spreading the word (such as leaving PBB leaflets in dog friendly pubs!). One of the vet nurses even recognised Scooby from his time in ICU and was thrilled to hear how well he’s doing. She said they rarely get to hear how dogs get on after leaving their care, so it made her day.’
Our volunteers are a crucial part of our team and really make a difference in what we do. Without them, dogs like Scooby won’t have access to lifesaving blood.
If your dog is fit and healthy, between 1 and 8 years old, weighs over 25kg, and is confident, they could become a blood donor and help to save lives.
