After an incredible 18 blood donations, 8-year-old Labrador Tilly recently celebrated her retirement at our donation session at the Dick Vet Hospital for Small Animals in Edinburgh.
What started as a single donation in 2022 became years of helping save the lives of dogs across the UK. For owner Julie, every visit was an emotional reminder of the difference Tilly was making.
‘I remember her first donation, the staff so kind, gentle and encouraging, making it feel a safe experience for her and me. I remember almost crying seeing her be so calm and able to do it. And all the subsequent appointments truly made my heart swell knowing she was saving so many other doggie's lives.’
Known for her love of adventure, swimming, long walks, and meeting new friends, Tilly brought the same enthusiasm to every donation session. Over the years she became a familiar face within Pet Blood Bank, building friendships with staff, volunteers, and fellow donor dogs alike.
‘Me and Tilly have loved all the donation sessions. She’d practically pull my arm off when we were approaching the door eager to see everyone! Everyone always making a big fuss of her as they do all the other doggies too.’
And donating blood wasn't her only good deed. Tilly volunteers as a Therapet with Canine Concern Scotland Trust, visiting nursing home residents, children's hospitals and university campuses to spread smiles and comfort wherever she goes (and always on the lookout for stray crumbs!)
In 2025, she was also chosen as the cover star of our Lifesaver Calendar, raising vital funds for our charity while celebrating the amazing donor dogs who make a lifesaving difference.
When the time came for her retirement celebration, Julie and her family were overwhelmed by the experience.
‘We were so touched by the lovely basket of generous gifts, the certificate and the sweet photo shoot too. You are such a kind and caring charity, and we are so happy to have been a small part of it. You are all amazing and I will continue to raise awareness of the incredible work you do.’’
While Tilly is now enjoying a well-earned retirement, there may already be a future donor in the family. Julie hopes their other dog Ruby will follow in Tilly's pawprints when she's old enough.
Dogs like Tilly are the reason we can continue providing lifesaving blood products to vets across the UK. Could your dog follow in Tilly's pawprints? Find out more about becoming a lifesaver.
