Meet Izzy, a Miniature Schnauzer with a big personality.

For over a decade, Izzy lived life to the fullest, but last October, everything changed.

After her usual afternoon walk and dinner, Izzy’s breathing became heavy, and she was suddenly struggling to climb the stairs.

Her family rushed her to their local practice, Thistle Vets, where they suspected she had a problem with her liver.

Izzy’s vet referred her to the University of Edinburgh’s Hospital for Small Animals, where this diagnosis was confirmed. They also diagnosed Izzy with immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA), a serious autoimmune disease where Izzy’s body started to attack its own red blood cells. This condition can lead to life-threatening anaemia, leaving the organs desperately short of oxygen.

Izzy received an emergency blood transfusion that saved her life, as well as management of her liver condition.

After being discharged, she suffered a relapse and needed another transfusion. Once again, blood donors came to her rescue.

Izzy’s owner Helen said, ‘Without the blood transfusions, Izzy would have died. The transfusions, together with the amazing care she received, enabled her to rally and have a lovely life. Izzy is still on medication but loving her life again, which brings us such joy. Thank you for giving her a second chance to live her best life.’

Izzy’s story is exactly why our charity exists. If your dog is aged between 1 and 8, over 25kg, and fit and healthy they could be a lifesaver. Visit our dog blood donation pages to learn more.
