Like us, dogs have different blood types and in the UK we test for DEA 1.1 Negative and Positive. With only 30% of our donors being Negative blood type, keeping up with demand can be challenging. We have found that certain breeds are more likely to be Negative and we are particularly appealing to these owners to register their canine companion. At present our stocks of this type are low and we need the following breeds to help us:
Dobermanns, Greyhounds, Boxers, German Shepherds, Flat-Coated Retrievers, Airedale Terriers, Weimaraners, Lurchers, American Bulldogs, Pointer (English) and English Bull Terriers.
We also have a criteria and to be a donor, your dog needs to be:
- Fit and healthy
- Between one and 8 years old
- Weigh more than 25kg
- Have a good temperament
- Have never travelled abroad
- Not on any medication
If your dog meets the above criteria, you can register them for a future collection session.
If your dog does not meet our donor criteria, there are still lots of ways that you can get involved in helping us.
