Meet Renzo, a brave 12.5-year-old rescue Miniature Pinscher who needed a blood transfusion to save his life.

In April, Renzo faced a life-threatening health crisis during his admission to the Queen Mother Animal Hospital. He was wasting away, refusing to eat, and despite the best efforts of the veterinary team, they struggled to find the cause. The veterinary staff suggested a blood transfusion. Renzo’s owner agreed, hopeful for a breakthrough. After the transfusion, Renzo quickly perked up, started eating again, and regained his energy. The veterinary staff were amazed at the quick turnaround!

After receiving the lifesaving transfusion, Renzo was diagnosed with anaemia caused by acute kidney injury (AKI) that had progressed to chronic kidney disease (CKD). With the right treatment plan and the support from the caring veterinary staff, Renzo was on the road to recovery.

Today, Renzo is living life to the fullest. His owner said, " My dog has had the most beautiful summer - sun bathing, swimming, eating grass - all because of the generosity of others. I wish I could thank the dog and owner that did that for us!"

Dogs like Renzo rely on blood being available in these life-threatening situations and we aim to ensure this is always the case. However, many more dogs are needed to come forward and give blood to meet this aim. If your dog is fit and healthy, between 1 and 8 years old, weighs over 25kg, and is confident, they could become a blood donor and help to save lives.
