Seven month old Cockapoo Mavis and her owners were on their way to enjoy a fun holiday when things turned into a nightmare: Mavis was hit by a car. Her owners rushed her to the nearest vets, Cockburn Vets in Coalville, where they performed emergency surgery on her internal bleeding.

Mavis suffered a lacerated spleen, which had to be removed, and severe blood loss. She needed a blood transfusion to help save her life. Following the transfusion and once she was more stable, she was taken to her normal vets, Medivet Alfreton, where they monitored her for a further five nights before operating to fix her broken femur with plates and pins. Thankfully, the day after the surgery she was able to go home and continue her recovery alongside her loving owners.

Mavis’ owner Misha said, ‘Without the fast acting of all the vets involved and the blood from Pet Blood Bank, I don’t think she would still be here today. I thank my lucky stars every day that I still get to wake up in the morning and see Mavis’ face. I cannot thank the vets and Pet Blood Bank enough for saving the life of my little girl.’

The blood Mavis received came from our donor, Allie. Allie’s owner Taylor said, ‘Allie is such a sweetheart and it's amazing to find out a little bit about the other families and pups that she's able to help. It feels a bit like the love we have for her is being shared with others.’

A huge thank you to Allie, Taylor, and all the other wonderful dogs and their owners who donate to help ensure blood is always available when dogs like Mavis need it.
